These are the places and people where she had spent her childhood. She recalls her poor lifestyle. She remembers the siblings, parents and neighbours. The boys with whom she had spent her childhood become apparent. She contrasts her present with the past she spent. She thinks about the change that she wants to make. She is going to think about leaving the home. She feels her enjoyments, how it would feel to leave the home, where she was grown up. She remembers her room, the picture hung on the wall, her father's memories. But she is in confusion whether it would be wise or not to leave the house. The mental/ psychological reasoning dominate her much, she remembers her past, work and house. She finds everything blur.
But she loves to enjoy new house with the boy she dreamt of She expects to get respect in a new home. The new treatments and thinking about her new home where Frank makes her happy. She thinks of Frank who was kind, mainly, openhearted. This story embarks on the developing adolescent life of the girl. She fell in love with him. The affair she enjoyed was not much liked by her father. Now she is in confusion whether she follows the boy or to be limited by her father's restrictions. She continued to sit by the window, she leaned by the window and had her reverie. She always has the day dreaming. She enjoys her day dreaming. She dreams to be with her boy, Frank. But she is always haunted by her mother's and father's scolding. She has the terror and dreams to escape with Frank, she has the hope that he would give her new life, love and way of livings. She has the hope with Frank. But these all are in her dream, the day dreaming only in reverie But she does not dare to do the actions. She prays with God, she dreams about Frank living, traveling with her. She is not even able to think about drawn back. She only prays all in vain, all in her dreams. When the bell rings she awakes. She is called by Frank and she fails to follow. She doesnot dare to be with Frank She merely calls "No"
She feels the pain. She is not able to act, she is confused she is not able to escape. Now she understands that these all are only her reveries. Thus, in this story, Joyce explores the psychology of the character Stream of consciousness technique explores the adventure of the mental state of the character. Q. Eveline is a story to represent Irish society. Discuss.
ANSWER
Women are shown squandering the money as well as they donot have head about spending their hard-earned money. It does not matter whether Frank is rich or poor, he is shown as the redeemer of the womanly pains. He is liked, loved by Eveline but she doesnot have dare to escape with him. The women are limited within the walls as Eveline is passively watching through the window. She has only the access to day- dreaming. She loves him, his father but she feels insecure from both. Father seems to control over her and Frank is not sure to love her. She always thinks of the pitiful vision of her mother. She even feels fear in hearing the mother's voice.
Eveline is limited in the day dreaming. She cannot start a new life, though she dreams of it. The society, the Irish community and the economic condition of the Irish women is not rich in the woman's perspective. As we know the Irish women outnumbered the males. And these were scarcity of the jobs for the women. So the women fail to make their life strong and remain always back lagging behind. As Eveline fails to manage her life personally in marriage, social and economic way, she understands that her life is not in the grip of her own choice. The story successfully binds the limitations of the woman freedom and choice.
